Word & adjective order: worked examples

Five from the set, with the answer filled in and the rule that decides it. The remaining questions are in the answer key below.

  1. 01

My brother plays the guitar every evening.

English keeps subject - verb - object together, with the time phrase last.

  2. 02

I like Italian food very much.

Nothing comes between the verb and its object, the adverb waits.

  3. 03

She always gets up at six o'clock.

Adverbs of frequency go before the main verb: always gets up, never eats.

  4. 04

My parents are never late for dinner.

With be, the frequency adverb comes after it: is often, are never.

  5. 05

She sang beautifully in the hall last night.

Manner, then place, then time: how - where - when.
