Readlang is a browser extension and web reader that lets you click any word on any page for a translation, then turns what you clicked into practice.
Readlang is one of the most quietly useful tools in language learning. Install the extension, go to any page in your target language, and every word becomes clickable. The translation appears inline, the word goes into your collection, and you carry on reading. There is very little to learn and almost nothing in the way.
It solves a specific problem well: the friction of looking things up. What it does not do is change how hard the page is. A news article written for native speakers is written for native speakers whether or not you can click the words in it. If you are missing one word in five, Readlang makes each of those lookups fast, but you are still reading something above your level, one interruption at a time.
linguafolks attacks the difficulty instead of the lookups. It measures your vocabulary size, then rewrites the page to sit at that level, hard enough to push you and easy enough to finish, and puts the original beside it. You still tap words you do not know. There are simply far fewer of them, and the ones that remain are the ones worth learning next.
Three things Readlang doesn't do
- The text stays as hard as it was written
- Readlang makes a difficult page survivable by translating the words you get stuck on. The sentence structure, the idioms and the register are untouched. linguafolks changes the page itself, rewriting it to your measured level while keeping the original beside it for comparison.
- No placement, so nothing adapts
- There is no measurement of your vocabulary size and therefore nothing for difficulty to follow. You choose what to read and find out afterwards whether it was a reasonable choice. In linguafolks the level is a number, and the number moves as you learn.
- Vocabulary comes back as text
- Clicked words return as flashcards: the word, the translation, and repetition until it sticks or you give up. In linguafolks each one is anchored to a word you already know that sounds like it, fused into a single scene, and drawn.
