Privacy Policy

Last updated 15 August 2026

This explains what linguafolks collects about you, why, who else sees it, and what you can demand of us. It is written to describe what the software actually does - if you find a difference between this page and the product, the difference is a bug, and we want to hear about it.

1. Who is responsible

The controller of your personal data is Grigor Hovhannisyan, 22 Rue Pierre Demours, 75017, Paris, France. You can reach us at hi@linguafolks.com.

We have not appointed a Data Protection Officer, as we are not required to.

2. What we collect

DataWhere it comes from
Account detailsYour email address and name, and a hashed password - or, if you sign in with Google, Facebook or X, the identity those services return to us. We never see your password for those accounts.
Your placementThe result of the level test: an estimated vocabulary size, a CEFR level, and per-band statistics about which words you recognised.
WordsEvery word you mark as known, unknown, or want-to-learn, with the part of the app it came from and when.
PreferencesThe languages you are learning and already speak, and the interests you pick to steer generated material.
Generated imagesThe address of each mnemonic image made for one of your words.
Usage countsHow many texts and images you have generated this month, so we can apply fair-use limits.
Content you supplyAnything you type or paste in: a topic, a prompt, or the address of an article you want to read. See section 5 - this leaves our servers.

We run no advertising and do not track you across other websites. We measure traffic with Plausible, which is cookieless and does not identify individual visitors - see sections 4 and 6. We do not ask for, and have no use for, any special category data - health, beliefs, politics and the like - so please don't put any into a prompt.

3. Why we use it, and our legal basis

  • To provide the service you asked for - placing you at a level, storing your words, generating texts and mnemonics, keeping your progress across devices. Legal basis: performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
  • To keep the service working and affordable - rate limits, monthly generation caps, and preventing abuse of the AI features. Legal basis: our legitimate interests in security and viability (Art. 6(1)(f)).
  • To answer you when you contact us. Legal basis: legitimate interests, or contract where it concerns your account.

We do not use your data to make automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects. Your placement level is calculated automatically, and it moves as you learn, but it only determines how hard your reading material is - and you can retake the test whenever you like.

4. Who else processes it

We keep the list short on purpose. Each of these acts on our instructions, under a data processing agreement.

ProviderWhat they do, and what they see
SupabaseHosts the database and handles sign-in. Sees everything listed in section 2.
AnthropicGenerates and translates reading material and builds mnemonics. Sees the content described in section 5. Does not receive your name or email.
OpenAIGenerates mnemonic images. Sees the image prompt only - a description of a memory scene. Does not receive your name or email.
MyMemory (Translated s.r.l.)Translates individual words you look up. Sees the single word, nothing else. This is a public translation service; treat words sent to it as not confidential.
SentryReceives error reports and stack traces when something breaks, so we can fix it. Configured not to send your identity or the contents of your requests - but an error message can incidentally contain a fragment of what you were doing when it happened.
Plausible AnalyticsCounts page views so we know which parts of the product are used. Sets no cookies, stores no identifiers, and builds no profile of you. Your IP address is used only momentarily, and never stored. Data is processed in the EU.
Our hosting providerRuns the application servers and sees request metadata such as IP addresses in ordinary server logs.

Some of these are established outside the EEA, principally in the United States. Where that is so, transfers are made under the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent safeguard.

We do not sell your personal data, and we never will. We will disclose data to authorities only where we are legally obliged to.

5. How the AI features use what you write

This is the part worth reading closely, because it is the part where your words leave our systems.

  • When you generate a text from a topic or prompt, that topic or prompt is sent to Anthropic.
  • When you give us the address of an article, we fetch that page and send its full text to Anthropic to rewrite at your level. Do not paste links to private, paywalled, or confidential material.
  • When you read a parallel text, its sentences are sent to Anthropic for translation.
  • When you build a memory scene for a word, the word, its meaning, and the interests you selected are sent to Anthropic; the resulting scene description is sent to OpenAI to draw.
  • When you tap a word for a quick translation, that word may be sent to MyMemory.

These providers process this content to return a result to us. Under their current API terms, neither Anthropic nor OpenAI uses content submitted through their APIs to train their models. They retain it briefly for abuse monitoring under their own policies, which we do not control.

Generated material can be wrong, odd, or unintentionally strange - that is the nature of the technology. Don't treat it as a reliable source of fact.

6. Cookies and browser storage

We set no advertising or analytics cookies, so there is no consent banner to click through. Our analytics (Plausible) works without cookies and without storing anything on your device, which is why we chose it. What we do use:

  • A sign-in cookie set by Supabase, which is what keeps you logged in. Strictly necessary; without it the product cannot work.
  • Local storage in your browser, under the lingualevel: prefix, holding your language choice, interests, locally-tracked progress, and whether you have dismissed the introduction. This never leaves your device, and logging out clears it.
  • Session storage, used to carry a just-completed test across the sign-up step, and to hand a generated text to the reader. It disappears when you close the tab.

7. How long we keep it

Your account data is kept for as long as your account exists. Delete your account and it is removed from our database immediately - see section 9. Backups are overwritten on a rolling basis and any residual copy disappears with them. Ordinary server logs are short-lived and are kept only for security and debugging.

8. Your rights

Under the GDPR you may:

  • ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
  • have inaccurate data corrected;
  • have your data erased;
  • ask us to restrict processing, or object to processing based on legitimate interests;
  • receive your data in a portable, machine-readable form;
  • withdraw any consent you have given, without affecting what came before.

Write to hi@linguafolks.com and we will respond within one month. If you think we have handled your data badly, you are entitled to complain to your national data protection authority - for us, the CNIL (Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés, cnil.fr) - though we would rather you told us first and gave us the chance to fix it.

9. Deleting your account

You can delete your account yourself, from your preferences. It removes your sign-in details, your placement, every word you have saved, your preferences, your generated images and your usage counts. It is immediate and cannot be undone.

10. Children

linguafolks is not intended for anyone under 16, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child under 16 has an account, tell us and we will remove it.

11. Changes

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and tell account holders by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use linguafolks after that means you accept the revised policy.
