The Italian words you already know

Italian is the most conservative of the major Romance languages: it stayed closer to Latin in both sound and spelling than French or Spanish did. Since the learned half of English vocabulary is Latin borrowed through French or taken directly, the two meet on a very large common ground.

English has also borrowed from Italian directly, and in specific domains it borrowed wholesale - music, food and art are largely Italian vocabulary living inside English. Piano, soprano, tempo, opera, studio, replica and dozens more are not cognates at all but straightforward loans, which the data marks as borrowings.

The regularity is the useful part. Because Italian preserved the Latin endings so faithfully, the correspondences are more mechanical than in French: -zione, -ità and -oso do almost all of the abstract vocabulary between them.

Italian spelling is close to Latin, which makes the words long. Recognising responsabilità as responsibility is easy; producing it under time pressure is not, and the extra syllables are where learners stall.

There are real false friends, and several are food-adjacent, which means you will meet them. They are worth ten minutes before a trip rather than after.

Words English borrowed from Italian sometimes narrowed on the way. A word that means one specific thing in English can be the ordinary general word in Italian, so an English sense is a starting hypothesis rather than a definition.

Take -zione first - it is the single highest-yield rule in the pair, and it maps onto an English ending you already produce automatically.

Then -ità and -oso, which between them cover most abstract nouns and a large share of descriptive adjectives.

Say the words aloud as you read them. Italian spelling is phonetic, so unlike French the written form actually tells you the pronunciation, and the shared vocabulary is one of the few places where reading practice transfers to speaking.
